What is your full name? Brian James Parker Where were you born? St. Mary's Hospital, Lewiston, Maine Are you single, dating or married? I am unfortunately single. Boxers or briefs? Briefs. What got you in to music? Long story. I was trying to convince my dad to let me get my eyebrow pierced and my brother had been playing guitar for a few months at that point. My dad really didn't want me to get the piercing done so he offered to buy me a bass instead. The rest, as they say, is history. How did the band start?(i.e. How did you meet) Nate Seguin, our drummer, was in my French II Honors class in freshman year of high school. Before that year, we had never been in school together because he went to a Catholic School and I had been public schooled. He was taking keyboard lessons and I had been playing bass at this time so we got together and started recruiting people to join Hibryd. Since then, we've gone through a singer, two drummers, and a guitarist to get to our four-person lineup (Nick Ouellette - vocals, Nick Parker - guitar, Brian Parker - bass, Nate Seguin - drums). What do you play? I play bass in the band. I have two basses; my main bass is a Warwick Thumb Bolt-On 5-string with a natural finish tuned GEADG and my backup bass is an Ibanez Soundgear 305 5-string with a jewel blue finish tuned GDADG at the moment. Who writes the music, lyrics? Usually Nate and I write the musical basis of songs and we alternate writing the lyrics, but Nick Ouellette has become more involved in lyric-writing recently. What do you write first the music or the lyrics? We usually write the music first because we like to have a musical basis down before trying to write the lyrics. It just works out better that way for us. How much say does each member get the writing process? After Nate and I write the main ideas of songs, each member gets free will to an extent to add their own touches to the music. Describe yourself in 3 words Funny. Knowledgeable. Goofy. Describe the band in 3 words Metal. Funk. Hip-hop. What kind of a school kid were you? Well, I still am a school kid, and I'm the kind of kid who's quiet because he doesn't want the attention but knows most of the answers to the questions the teacher is asking. Tell me something about yourself, that you don't normally get to
reveal Tell me a funny joke If a chicken and a half lays an egg and a half, how long does it take a grasshopper with wooden legs to kick all the seeds out of a dill pickle? - Nate Seguin There is no punchline. Its just a funny little brain-teaser. If you could be a cartoon character, which one would you be? Dogbert. He's short, egotistical, and makes a lot of money through scams. Everything that I'm not and can never be lol. What should the fans expect from a Hibryd show? Well, hopefully they don't expect too much... just kidding. When you come to a Hibryd show, you should expect the unexpected. We're not a cliche metal band and we're not like every other band in the rap-rock breakthrough genre. If you don't come to our shows with an open mind about the music we play, I don't think you'll understand what we're trying to get across with our music. Our music caters to what we were thinking of doing at the time, so its very sporadic and random. Oh yeah, and please mosh at the shows. We like moshing lol. What do you think of the Maine music scene? I think the Maine music scene is a variety of things depending on the area you follow. The Portland scene has an incredible fanbase and everybody tries to get themselves down there to get a considerable reaction. However, other cities are really suffering in terms of local scenes now, mostly because there are so few people in the places that like the music and go out to the shows. Hopefully more people get involved soon, but as it is now, it seems like the same 50-60 people show up at every metal/hardcore show in Lewiston/Auburn. Thats not a bad thing, but we need to get more people in the know about local music. What's your favorite food? (at home and on the road) Nothin' like cheddar chesse Goldfish lol. Why do you classify your music as? I really can't classify our music. It has a metal edge in some points, a melodic, funky touch in other songs, and the lyrics range anywhere from singing to screaming to moderate rapping. It's Hibryd, it's who we are, it's what we'll continue doing. If you could change places with someone for a day who would it be
an Whats the best show you have played where and why? The best show I have ever played at this point was our first show at Club What? in downtown Lewiston, Maine on August 25th, 2000. Although the show got shut down shortly after we played and things went bad after that, it was the show I was most into as a musician and it started everything going. Plus, I played hard enough to get my first blood blister, that was kind of neat. Where do you see yourself and the band in 5 years? Hopefully, if all goes well, the band will be signed to a record contract in five years and we'll either be doing studio work on our first national release or be touring in support of our first national release. What were you dream and ambitions growing up and have you accomplished
any of them ? As a child, I had many sports related dreams: Who would you like to play with that you haven?t before (any band)? When you're at a show, do you ever crowd surf during your set or enter pits while other bands are playing their sets? I practice at home a lot, so I don't usually make it to local shows when we're not on the bill to play. However, I have gotten onto the floor in some concerts and hopefully sometime soon I'll be able to pull off my first crowd surf while playing. Wireless systems rule. How do you get ready for your set? (any strange rituals?) I read Dilbert comics the night before a show to calm my nerves. As for on the night of the show, I usually play some finger exercises on my bass and stretch my muscles to make sure I'm not in pain when I'm playing. What is a talent that few people know about or something you can
do that most others can't? Whats your favorite band(other than your own) My favorite band of all time has to be either Korn, Deftones, or Rage Against the Machine. If you were on death row what would your last meal be? A can of Pepsi and Cheddar Cheese Goldfish. Whats your favorite song (yours or someone else's) My favorites songs are: from my own band - Surreal from another band - Pushit (live) by Tool Whats your favorite CD? My favorite CD is either Make Yourself by Incubus or Aenima by Tool. Does your mother approve of your job and music? My mother is very supportive of my work in the band. She's a fan of our musical style and she knows how much we love to play. What was the funniest thing that has ever happened while on tour?
Does the band allow bootlegging? If yes, then what are the limits (is there soundboard patch, stand
mics ect) How do you feel about mp3's and Napster? I occassionally use Napster but I do not believe that the mp3 and Napster situation are very conducive to the growth of local and independent bands. The program allows people to get whole CDs of the band's mastered work for free instead of paying to support the artists who put their money into recording and producing CDs. What advice do you have for people that are trying to make it in the music business? Meet people with musical talent. Befriend them, make sure they'll never stab you in the back. Never force anything. Respect everyone's opinions. |
